Orton Gillingham Testimonials
Our son began working with Kara at the start of fifth grade year. He struggles with multiple learning issues including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADD. Kara immediately created a positive learning environment tailored to meet his individual needs. He demonstrated improvement in his ability to decode and spell fifth grade vocabulary words within a few sessions, and a leap in his MAP scores for language arts. His teachers report improved confidence at school, and Orton Gillingham strategies taught by Kara have decreased his frustration with completing writing and vocabulary assignments at home.

My second grade son entered tutoring with reading map scores in the teens. After working with Kara twice a week for 7 months his reading scores are now in the 60th percentile. A whole new world has opened for him. He is reading everything now.

Unlike other tutors we have worked with in the past, Kara takes great care educating parents. When we first began working with Kara she sat down with us for more than an hour reviewing our testing results and explaining what Orton Gillingham tutoring is all about.”

Our son (diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia) started working with Kara in the middle of second grade. He was barely reading and spelling was even worse. We have been with Kara for a year now and my son has already reached end of year reading targets for all third graders at mid-year! He volunteers to read aloud at Scouts something totally new and he is reading for pleasure for the first time. His teachers report a dramatic increase in how much he is writing and the quality of his writing is so much better. If you are lucky enough to get a slot with Kara take it and stick with it to see real change in your child’s reading, writing and self confidence.

After a few months our daughter had jumped three reading levels. Her confidence in reading and spelling has improved dramatically. She really relies on the skills Kara taught her. From tapping to syllable division to so many memorable spelling rules. All kids should be taught the OG way.

Working with Kara is a dream. She always emails out appointment reminders and explains everything in detail. You could not find a more accommodating tutor.

I think something parents might not realize when hiring a reading tutor is that Kara is not plugging your child into some program. She develops a personalized plan for your child rooted in the OG philosophy. You are not getting some watered down “based on OG” instruction, in fact you are getting a tutor who has been trained by a fellow of the Orton Gillingham Academy of Practitioner and Educators, which is the only organization authorized to maintain professional standards for the practice of the OG approach. I encourage parents to make sure whomever they hire has proper OG training.

After failing the 5th grade writing test most likely due to his illegible handwriting, we decided to get some help for our 11 year old son. In an email communication regarding his sports team, I noticed Kara Campbell’s signature linked to a web site for handwriting tutoring. I contacted her hoping to get him into one of her camps over the summer. She was able to work him in for private sessions thinking it would be a better fit for him. He was reluctant to sign on for more “school” in the summer, but begrudgingly went to his first session…and came home smiling!
Not only did Kara teach him the proper way to hold a pencil and form letters, she gave him back his school confidence. He never complained about practicing or going to his sessions with her. That fact alone is probably the best testimonial to her skill and patience. He very quickly got the hang of the proper form and we are all happy to be able to read his writing!
I recommend Handwriting with Miss Kara without reservation. I’m sure Kara is great with girls, but she is especially skilled at working with boys, probably due to have a few of her own. Her approach doesn’t require hours of sitting which works well for active boys. She understands boys and mine responded to her better than I could have hoped for.

His teacher couldn’t believe the difference in his handwriting after 12 sessions. I wish we hadn’t waited so long!

It bothered me a lot that the school wasn’t teaching cursive. In just a few months my daughter was writing beautiful cursive – that we could read! Thanks Miss Kara!
